What are HMO’s?
Houses of Multiple Occupancy are categorised as properties that are let out to three or more people, usually unrelated. Each occupant must be paying rent and consider the HMO as their main residence.
Originally the tenants would have shared kitchen, living and bathroom facilities. But the majority of HMO’s are now constructed or converted with en-suite accommodations for each tenant.
To become a landlord of an HMO, a three-year license must be obtained by the relevant local authority. This assures safety measures are in place, the property is suitable for professional tenants, and in line with private rental regulations.
